Mulroy Senior Housing Tower and Community Opportunity Center
We recently completed a two-phase $5.5 million renovation of the Mulroy apartments and community center for the Denver Housing Authority. Built in 1969, this complex was completely gutted and brought up to current life safety and ADA standards. The residential tower had all mechanical and electrical systems upgraded and all interior finishes replaced.
The site work was extensive. The main gymnasium entrance was relocated, parking reconfigured, and a new pedestrian connection provides access to the newly expanded light rail line and Knox Court station. This fully-accessible path winds past a new raised-bed community garden and covered viewing platform.
Sustainable initiatives include a rooftop photovoltaic array, solar thermal hot water system, LED lighting, destratification fans, terrewalk 100% recycled sidewalks, and solar-powered trash/recycling stations that notify maintenance when they need to be serviced. Funding was provided by the HOPE VI and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants.
